The Cost of Getting Materials Wrong

Under-ordering causes delays. Over-ordering wastes budget. The right buffer is 8–12% for most repair types.

Under-Ordering

Running short mid-project means stopping work, re-ordering, and waiting on delivery. The idle labor cost often exceeds the material cost itself.

Dye Lot Matching

For tiles and flooring, materials from different production runs can differ in color. Always buy from the same batch when possible.

Supplier Minimums

Many suppliers have minimum order quantities. Factor this into your planning so you aren't forced to order a full pallet when you need half.

Calculator Questions

What overage percentage should I use?
For most repairs, 10% is a solid default. Complex cuts, irregular shapes, or pattern-matching may warrant 15%.
Does this work for metric measurements?
Enter your area dimensions in square meters and set coverage per unit in square meters. The logic is the same regardless of unit system.
How is "units required" calculated?
Area with overage is divided by coverage per unit and rounded up to the nearest whole number, since partial units cannot be purchased.
Can I use this for paint calculations?
Yes. Enter your wall area as the base, and set coverage per unit to the square footage one gallon covers (typically 350–400 sq ft per coat).
